Abstract

Abstract

This thesis is of the three objectives, i.e.:-  (1) to study the modern health healing, (2) to study the health healing in Buddhism; and (3) to integrate the modern health healing into Buddhism. The research methodology is the qualitative one inwhich the data is analyzed with the primary and secondary sources of Buddhist scriptures and the other related medical documents. Depth interview with five key informants as specialists was reviewed with research framework on the method of Buddhist treatment in integrate approach.

The results of the research are as followings :

The modern health has been treated by means of the medical instruments. It is meant to get rid diseases with medicine and medical scientific instruments.  The healing care is carried out separated physics from mentality.  Each doctor has been trained in a specific field. It is based on scientific method and means. There, the treatment has been made according to medical diagnosis.

The Buddhist healing could be found in the Buddhist scriptures especially as prescribed in the Vinaya Piaka and some other suttas on causes as mentioned in the orderliness of nature ; physical inorganic order, physical organic order, and moral laws. One thing important is that Buddhism regards decease not as an alian but ordinary thing within the physical body. Thus natural treatment has to be cured. Both physical and mental treatment are to be healed side by side. The modern medical science concentressed on physic while Buddhism stresses both physic and spirituality especially meditation as means to calm body and mind of the patients. In prevention of deceases, food, residence cleanliness, dresses, and environments are important to care for. The Buddhist approach of health integration is as followings.

1. The modern health care depends on physical diagnosis of doctors with instruments as medical tools. In Buddhism mental tools related to the five aspects of natural law, i.e., physical inorganic order, physical organic order, psychic law, and moral law have to be thought of and cared for, including other deceases caused by depending physical organs.

2. Application of any medical instruments must be used carefully. Its effect may effect to the patient. On case of psychiatry, the treatment should apply Buddhist means to heal.

3. Medicinal treatment must be used with care due to the fact that some of them are antiseptic or harmful to the patient. With meditation treatment, physical and psychic health might be recovered.

4. The method of the modern medical science is usually used by means of x-ray, injection, operation, having a medicine, etc., while Buddhist means by way of meditation practice.

5. The purposes of health care, apart from the patient recovery, is to make a patient have a true knowledge of their sickness. It is not meant to get rid decease solely by medical instruments because it might cause other decease into the body or other effect. The holistic health care should be healed in order to prevent and cure both physical and psychiatrical health care side by side.
