Abstract

Abstract

This thesis is of three objectives namely:- 1) to study the state of being Ven. Arahantas in the Buddhist scriptures, 2) to study Ven. Arahantas’ roles in propagating Buddhism, 3) to analyze Ven. Arahantas’s roles in propagation of Buddhism.  This research methodology is a qualitative one with documentary researcher on Buddhist scriptures and related documents.

From the research, it is found that one who is to attain the state of being the Noble One must get rid of the 10 Samyojanas compleately.  Though Ven.  Arahantas will be out of the defilement in same way, they have the different qualities.  That is to say, Ven. Arahanta of the type of Sukkha-Vipassaka or Ven. Arahanta of type of Pañña-Vitmutti will not be of the supernatural power.  Ven.  Arahantas of  the types of Cetovimutti are those who go away from the defilements otherwise called those who go away from all the defilements, otherwise calles  Jhãna-Labhĩ Puggala who is of 3 qualities :- 3 Vijjãs, 6 Abhiññãs and the 4 Pạtisambhidas.  The Doctaines which support one to attain Arahantaship are 37 Bodhipakkhiya Dhammas which are the Dhammas which help the persons to realize the 37 Noble Dhammas:- the 4 Satipatthãnas, the 4 Samappadhanas, the 4 Iddhipadas, the 5 Indriyas, the 5 Balas, the 7 Bojjhangas and 8 Noble Paths.

The roles in propagating and spreading Buddhism by Ven. Arahantas are of the good success, but there must be the explanation and the enlargement of the essence to cause the people to understand the Doctrine since announced by the Buddha.  The result of the propagation at each time caused many people to attain the Dhamma.  The essence of the Dhammas which is the conversation among desciples and different people reflect ones to see the way of the interest in the Dhammas and the viewpoint of the translation of Buddha-Dhammas by the people at that age.  The interest appearing in the conversation among the people reflects one to see the Dhammas and viewpoint in the translation of Buddha-Dhammas by the people at that age.

The 5 Ven. Mahãkassapa, Sãrĩputta, Mahãmoggallãna, Uruvelakassapa and Ănanda Arahantas’ roles in propagating and spreading Buddhism caused the people to have the faiths in Buddhism.  Thus, they were many people who announced themselves to be Upãsaks and Upãsikãs.  Thus, it is regarded  that these monks were the important power in propagating Buddhism who continued up to present time.  Thus, the Buddhists took those Venerables to be the exemplary persons in announcing and spreading Buddhism to be developed more and more.
