Abstract
The research entitled ‘the study values and Buddhist doctrines related to the Bodhi tree in Theravāda Buddhism’ consists of 3 objectives: 1) to study history of Bodhi tree in Theravāda Buddhism 2) to study values related to the Bodhi tree in Theravāda Buddhism and 3) To study Buddhist doctrine related to the Bodhi tree in Theravāda Buddhism by using qualitative research. Population for this study is 10 Monks and layman who have knowledge about Bodhi tree. The tools of data collection are both the primary source and secondary source. The interview is also used for data collection. The analysis of qualitative data is made by analyzing the content for matching objective and scope of this study.
The result of this research is found that
Bodhi tree means the symbol of enlightenment of the Lord Buddha where he is enlightened under this tree. Furthermore, Bodhi tree is still born in the same day as the Lord Buddha. From the meaning and concerning between Bodhi tree and the Lord Buddha that is became very important tree in Buddhism. It is also the statute of the Lord Buddha, values stupa for worshiping, holy and the symbol of Buddhism. Therefore, Bodhi tree has played important role to Buddhist for highest respect which is the cause of worship the place used by the Lord Buddha.
Bodhi tree is the seeding that has respected of Buddhist since the Lord Buddha period. Bodhi tree in the history of the Lord Buddha there are two seeding namely: one at Buddhagaya where the Lord Buddha has got enlightenment and one more at Chetawanmahāvihāra temple is Ānandabodhi tree that this tree is still alive till now. In the part of Bodhi tree has got seeds from Buddhagaya which is Uddesikajedī in the present time. There are three trees as follows: 1) Bodhi tree is at Buddhagaya, 2) Bodhi tree is at Anurādhapura and 3) Ānanadabodhi tree is at Chetawanmahāvihāra temple.
In Thailand has grown Bodhi tree from Thawarawadee, Sukhothai, Ayuthaya, Rrattanakosin period. Later in the reign of the fifth Kingrama has grown at Atsadangkanimitra temple Khoasichong. It is a very important tree of Thailand because had brought the seed come from Buddhagaya to Thailand.
Bodhi tree in Thailand has got the seeds from Buddhagaya that most of Thai people or Lanna people have believe that this tree is holy and can end suffering. Therefore, it has the tradition of offering the pole vault Bodhi tree, procession the fresh mink to water the Bodhi and making diversity ceremony under Bodhi tree. They have believed that if anyone has conducted these traditions, they will have happiness, prosperity, long life. On other way it has maintained the Buddhism. There are three believes namely 1) Maintaining the Buddhism, 2) the pole vault Bodhi tree is one of long life ceremony and 3) for poling vault Bodhi tree is not felled. The procession the fresh mink to water the Bodhi has implemented as follow the King of Asokamaharaja that is praised Buddhism to prosper for people who has made merit both in the present time and the future. It also is a factor to succeed for the four paths leading to Nirvana.
Conclusion, The Bodhi tree in Thailand has got seeds from Buddhagaya or Srilangka that is more worshiped of the Buddhist to the present time. This thing is origin of values and Buddhist principles of Buddhism that has believed in good practicing for getting happiness and can be leaded to Nirvana.
