Abstract

The objectives of this thesis were 1) to study the theories related to the Five Precepts in the Buddhist scriptures, 2) to study observing the Five Precepts of Rambhai Barni Rajabhat University students, and 3) to study the model promoting the observing the Five Precepts of Rambhai Barni Rajabhat University students. In this research, the researcher conducted qualitative research, documentary research, and field research.

The results of this research indicates  that the terms “Sila” (Precept) or “Viratti” in Buddhism have been appeared in the Buddhism doctrine, i.e., in the Tripitaka. The explanations of these terms have been found in Atthakatha and tikā. The meanings of “Precept” were mentioned by Buddhist philosophers in many sources. For example, precept means normality or normal condition, doing things by mainly considering duties as appropriate in normal conditions without being anxious, flaw, and sadness.  Sila  refers to the predetermined regulations as the guidelines for right conduct to achieve physical and verbal normality. Precept is the practices relating to the external conditions. Observing precepts can lead to pleasantly physical and verbal developments. With precepts, humans can easily concentrate their own mind. Therefore, precepts are considered as fundamental merit for self-practice to develop concentration and intelligence and as part of the threefold training (Tri Sikkhā), consisted of Sila (morality), Samādhi (concentration), and Paññā (wisdom). This is called Sikkha provision which means the self-practice to develop higher concentration and wisdom.

The problem situation about the violation of the Five Precepts of Thai students, Buddhist students normally follow religious teachings. In Thai society, the Five Precepts practices have been cultivated in Buddhists from preschool, primary school, secondary school to university level. It can be said that Rambhai Barni Rajabhat University students attended moral and ethical training camp, Pink & Green Camp, etc.  Throughout the period of study, religious activities have been consistently held. The Five Precepts have been mentioned every time organized these activities as the university has realized that humans seeking for happiness and peace should seriously follow the Five Precepts, Benjasil, or Five Buddhist Precepts, as known as humanitarian or Ariyadhamma.

For the guidelines for observing the Five Precepts of Rambhai Barni Rajabhat University students, university administrators at various levels should give priority and seriously promote the ways to observe the Five Precepts to increase the morale of well-behaved students, to be a role model for juniors and younger generations by creating various promotion guidelines. For example, scholarships or awards should be granted to well-behaved persons who have observed the Five Precepts. More importantly, the punishment measure should be implemented for the Five Precepts violators such as activity and affective scoring deduction, and so on. The Student Development Division shall be responsible for scoring deduction and determining activities and punishment measures to enhance students’ compliance with the Five Precepts when entering Rambhai Barni Rajabhat University.
