Abstract

The thesis “An Analytical Study of the Parents Support (Mātāpitu- upatthāna) in Theravāda” had three main purposes: (1) to study a concept of the parents support in Theravāda, (2) to study the Buddhist teachings relating to the parents support, and (3) to study a way of developing and promoting the children to support their parents in the daily life. This study was a documentary research with collecting data by interviewing the academic and experienced persons who were recognized as a person of supporting the parents. Then, a result of the data analysis was taken as a part of this research study.

                  A result of the present study was found that the principles in Theravāda Buddhism relating to the parents support covered a physical and mental support as well as a mundane and supramundane support. The other principles were that the parents making a favour before were called ‘Puppakāri’ and children making the gratitude were called ‘Kataññukatavedi’.  Moreover, the principle to make children conscious of gratitude was six kinds of respect, six directions, etc.

                  The principles in Theravāda Buddhism in accordance with parents support covered both principles for support and instruction: six kinds of respect, six directions, six states of conciliation, four virtues for a good household life and four noble sentiments, and the principles as an enemy of the parent support: nine kinds of impurity, and detraction (the fifth point of deep defilement).

            Ways to instruct the children about the parent support in the daily life were consisted of four elements: awareness, encouragement, instruction and practical imitation.   The awareness meant to make children conscious clearly aware and conscious of the gratitude. The encouragement was to listen, notice and remember whatever the parents taught. The instruction was to encourage children to support the parents bravely. Finally, the practical imitation was to take a visible example and a standard that children could follow and take such things as a way of life forever.
